Benholm & Johnshaven

Welcome to our special part of Scotland. We are known as The Mearns Coastal Strip and are situated on the spectacular section of The A92 Coastal Road.

Picturesque Johnshaven is nestled within the stunning A92 Coastal Road. To the South is Dundee, St Andrews and Edinburgh and to the North is Aberdeen, Speyside and Royal Deeside.

We would love to share the Coastal Strip with you and the incredible places that are on the A92.

We love our beautiful area which dates back to Neolithic times and we’re surrounded by picturesque fishing villages established in the 1600s, Nature Reserves and award winning beaches .

If you are interested in authenticity, past times, pure beauty, friendliness and the quieter ways of life then we are for you. There are lots of things to do for all the family. The pace is slow and rich in experiences so you can slow down and, “smell the roses” however long you are with us.

In the 19th century and early 20th century every East Coast village had some connection with the fishing industry. Many small villages had large fishing fleets. When the fleet was in, the village would be busy and noisy. When the men were out fishing the harbour would often be quiet.

Johnshaven is a small fishing port between Montrose and Stonehaven. This was once a lively fishing community. It was one of the last villages in Scotland where traditional long-line fishing was practiced.

Benholm a pretty little hamlet. Though small now, it was the original  settlement for Benholm and Johnshaven Parish. (1200+ persons in 17th Century). The Church and Mill date back to the 12th century. There was also a school, a smiddy and a manse (now private homes).

The church dates back to the 12th century and was rebuilt in the Georgian style in 1832. There is a 15th century sacrament house dating from its Catholic origins. A dedication to the 4 year old daughter Lady Mary who died in 1620 has rather gruesome skeletons.

There has been a water mill on this site since 12th century also. It has beautiful grounds and is tucked in a pretty and protected spot where the water is fed. There is a Board of Trustees which has plans to renovate the building . Community events take place here.
